recess raglan and some dinos

Pin It I took last week off.  I was spending a lot of time reading military history and the current national security environment that I just never got my blog post written.  But, I am back this week to share something I made my son before I left for Georgia.

I bought the pattern for the recess raglan as part of the fall Pattern Anthology collection.  It was my first See Kate Sew pattern and it was just as great as all the other patterns I have bought from the Anthology gals.

It is just a simple raglan... so nothing fancy but I really love the way it fits my son.

He liked the bright fabric that I chose.  His favorite color right now is bright lime green so this was right up his alley.  It has become a favorite for going to school or casual outings.  Here he is wearing at it a museum in Anchorage that had a lot of bones from dinosaurs and Ice Age animals.  He had a lot of fun but it was a little chilly and would not take off his coat.

I was a bit disappointed, because my pictures tend to be a bit lame and I thought I could get some great ones with dinosaur bones (casts) as my props.  Oh, well.

I made a second one out of a fabric with a lot of little fish.  I think it looks a bit like PJs but he chose the fabric and does not mind its lounge wear vibe.

Temporary sewing space

Pin It  Hello and happy Veteran's Day.  Most of the time, I just talk about my sewing projects or use them as a means to talk about my amazing kids.  But occasionally I mention my day job; the fact that I am a Solider in the US Army.  And right now, the two are converging in a different way.

See, the Army has seen it fit to send me to Georgia for some military schooling.  And I will be here until March.  I am to learn how to be a better thinker, leader, and planner.  I am living in a hotel on post and attend classes during the day.  My family is still in Alaska enjoying their first winter up north.

So, what do I do when I am not studying how to think, lead, and plan?  I have no kids to chase around and no husband to kiss.  Well, I brought my sewing machine and some fabric.  I figure there is no reason for me to stop sewing entirely.  I have plenty of homework, but there will be some down time to make some clothes for the kids.  I am just unsure how I will get pictures without models.

Also, I figure I can get out and see the area.  I have never been to Atlanta (except the airport and that doesn't count) and one of these weekends, I will go check it out.

Any way, here I am in Georgia trying to make the best of the situation.  I will learn what I can and hope I can stay busy until I get to be home with my family.

Any of you have to travel for work?

Boy's Polo, Alaska style

Pin It My son told me he wanted more shirts that have a knit body but woven collar.  Well, that is not what he exactly said.  He said "I want more shirts like this."  And he held out a brown and green striped polo with a knit body, ribbed cuffs, and a woven collar + placket.

Off I went in search of an appropriate pattern.  If I did not find what I needed, I planned on modifying a collared shirt pattern.  But luckily, I found exactly what he wanted on BurdaStyle.  The pattern is sized (European) 110-134.  What I liked best was the professional finish of the placket.  It was just like his RTW shirt.

He is a 110 and it fit him perfectly.

I used a bright textured knit that I recently bought for him and a woodsy flannel that I bought when I was pregnant with him.  The ribbing was purchased some time in between and was a scrap left over from a previous project.  A great mix of stash busting and finding great deals.

To tie the woodsy themed flannel in and to appease my boy who wanted an embroidered element, I choose a bear scene for the back.  Here in Alaska, the woodsy theme is everywhere.  Actually they often refer to the style here as Alaska casual which basically equates to some hiking or camouflage clothing mixed with jeans and a knit hat.
